"Here might be one of the very best of courses, for the turf is excellent and there is a flavour of Gleneagles about it.It stands high and is pleasanter in hot weather than cold, for the wind can blow with penetrating shrewdness."
"The Golf Courses of Great Britain" - Bernard Darwin,1925.
Beau Desert - "The Beautiful Wilderness" - is a private members' club situated near the village of Hazel Slade,on Cannock Chase in Staffordshire. The land once formed part of the Beaudesert Estate of Charles Henry Alexander Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey.
The present course, opened in 1921,was designed by William Herbert Fowler who was responsible for Walton Heath,Lytham & St Anne's,The Berkshire,Ganton and Aberdovey among others.
Beau is a magnificent 18 hole course, with fast greens and narrow fairways designed to test the skills of even the very best golfers.Visiting the rough is not recommended.
During the early period of the Clubs' history, a frequent guest of the Marquess was the Prince of Wales. Eminent members have included Viscount Newport (later the 6th Earl of Bradford – President 1946-55), the Earl of Dartmouth (1938-42), the Earl of Lichfield (1942-55) and Lord Vernon (1938-49).
Always highly regarded, the course hosted the Midland and Staffordshire professional and amateur championships as early as 1935. The greatest honour bestowed upon it has been its selection to host a regional qualifying round of the Open Championship on 17 occasions. More recently Beau Desert hosted the Carris Trophy.
